Problem saving files to desktop when standard user is using UAC to elevate into admin user account RRS feed

  • Question

  • When using UAC to access run something requiring admin elevation, when you download/save files and want them to be easily accessible on the desktop or downloads folder, the file is saved into the profile of the admin user account instead.  This is likely "by design," but it isn't intuitive and we need a way to work around this so it isn't such a hassle to run as an standard user account.  UAC users keep saving files to the wrong desktop and then can't find the file they just download.

Is there a way to make a "Favorites"  shortcut in Windows Explorer under the admin user's context that points to the Standard user's desktop and downloads folders that is easy to browse for in "save as" dialogs?

Any tips/shorcuts to make browsing for and saving files while using UAC elevation more user friendly and intuitive?

  • Hi,

Firstly, please check IE download location settings:

Open IE options, choose View Downloads, then click the Options in the left corner of the bottom.

    Check and modify IE location.

On the other hand, in my opinion, this phenomenon, this problem can be managed by Domain Administrator, it would be better to contact administrator to confirm this events.

You can also try to create a new user account to test this events.

This does not solve the issue.  It is not an IE specific problem.  It is an issue with any application with a save dialog prompt when using UAC.

Is there a way to add the standard user's desktop, downloads folder and documents folder as "Favorites" for the UAC admin user so that when you do "Save as," you have easy access to those locations?

There is no reason I would want to ever download and save files into a different profile's desktop than the one of the user logged into Windows.

The default of the save to desktop function pointing to only the UAC user's desktop instead of the local user's desktop doesn't work well.
