Setting up DNS in a lab environment RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello friends

I hope I am posting in the right forum, and not violating any rules, and please forgive me if I have.

Newbie here , trying to setup a lab environment in Virtual box with Windows 2012 server.

On the first machine SYD-DC, I have installed the domain controller, and setup the static ip using the following command:

netsh interface ipv4 set address "Ethernet" static 10.10.10.10

As soon as I put this command, the network goes offline. I am using the Host Only Adapter setting.

On the 2nd machine, ADL-DC, I use the above command to setup the static address to 10.10.10.20

and then use the following command as instructed in my lab manual :

netsh interface ipv4 set dnservers "Ethernet" static 10.10.10.10 primary, and I get the following message :

Configured Dns server is incorrect or does not exist.

Can anyone please tell me what did I do wrong , and how I may correct this problem, any help would much be appreciated. Thanks a lot !!!

  • You missed the Mask and Gateway...

In my example, 255.255.255.0 is the Mask and 10.10.10.1 is the Gateway

The correct command line should be:

    set address "Ethernet" static 10.10.10.10 255.255.255.0 10.10.10.1

Also, you should specify the DNS Address using this command line

set dnsservers "Ethernet" static 10.10.10.10 primary

  • Thanks a lot, that perfectly makes sense, but I wonder why the lab manual didn't mention about the mask and default gateway.

  • Hi RK,

As Cthivierge mentioned, you need to add mask and Gateway for your DC.

    >>netsh interface ipv4 set dnservers "Ethernet" static 10.10.10.10 primary,

For this command, please change 10.10.10.10 be 127.0.0.1.

    Best Regards

    John
