  • Thanks for sharing out the requested log files offline.

The failure was happening because of a malformed path being reported as a part of system-state:

    Service Name    : VBoxService
Service Caption : VirtualBox Guest Additions Service
    Registry key     : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VBoxService\ImagePath

    Value               : \system32\VBoxService.exe

Above, there is no starting drive letter for the service. Correcting this value fixed the issue.

    Thanks

  • The error code displayed above points that the 'Backup was Aborted.'

Could you provide more info so that we can understand what was the reason for this abort:
    1. When running through command line, can you share (copy-paste) the exact output for the operation on the screen?
    2. Is there any event published in the event log (EventViewer->ApplicationLogs->Microsoft->Windows->Backup). Ideally, for a backup stop, event ID 14 is published. If that's the case, then can you share (copy-paste) the event data (shown in Event Details).

    Thanks

  • It seems that the backup is failing with some generic (unknown) error, which is not expected.

Can you please share the log files under the folder (zip the folder) %windir%\Logs\WindowsServerBackup and send it across to spathak-at-microsoft-dot-com

    Thanks

  • Hi!
I had the same problem while backing up the systemstate on machines, running under virtualBox. I searched a solution for so many hours....

Your solution works great, thank you for this!

  • What if you have a similiar issue but are not running the VBOXService?  Should I go through the services key?  Or is there a tool I shoudl run

  • I am running on DC on Hyper-V and facing same issue. "The backup operation that started at '‎2010‎-‎04‎-‎23T15:17:14.846345600Z' has failed with following error code '2155347997'"

But i dont see a "VBoxService\ImagePath" entry in Regedit.  Any possibilities please?

    Thanks,

  • Error code 2155347997

Check out free space on backup location. R2 DC, for example, needs more than 7GB for .vhd files with system state.

Same case when using DPM 2007 - you need more space on system volume.

    Good luck

  • In my case same error 2155347997 and the reason was indeed disk space exactly as Yegor stated! I was using DPM 2007 which uses WSB on the protected source.

Source is the systemstate of a 2008R2 running MS SQL.
The WSB created a c:\WindowsImageBackup\....\...\3e0fd....VHD file with a size of ±7,6GB.
The used space on the system volume (c:) is ±20GB files/folders (without the .VHD).

I find it difficult to comprehend why we do not get a clear error in this case in the eventviewer stating there was a disk free space problem!

  • Hi,

I've also had this problem with a "bad" path of IBM Storage Manager.

I've posted a powershell script which my help others with this problem

    http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/ScriptCenter/en-us/8b49a002-f051-4014-99d7-33fc4b80c35e

I changed the path below from /'s to \ and all is well :o)

    "C:/Program Files (x86)/IBM_DS/IBMStorageManagerProfiler Server/bin/tomcat5.exe" //RS//IBMStorageManagerProfilerWebServer

Hope it helps anyone else out there.

    Kind Regards,

  • There is no log in C:\windows\logs\windowsserverbackup that shows an error.  I have a log from the previous job which was successful.

This job started, and failed and did not create a log.  I guess 2155347997 means this backup is something we hurriedly kludged together, it kinda works sometimes and we don't plan to fix it or support it either, and remember that you clicked SUBMIT while on your knees when you installed this software, and that we (MS) are not responsible for ANYTHING, no matter what, so why don't you be a man and go buy a thousand dollar software program to backup each your servers?

  • Hi,

I am having the same tye of issue as you reported above.

The backup operation that started at '‎2011‎-‎06‎-‎20T15:33:38.305879400Z' has failed with following error code '2147942413' (The data is invalid.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

I have been searching somewhat unsuccessfully for a solution. Did you manage to find a fix for this. To give a background on my problem, I have been successfully backing up an image each night using Windows server 2008 backup and no all of a sudden I get these errors. (data is invalid). I have tried different backup options (e.g to external USB drive and only selecting a few files, same error.). I've run chkdsk which reports no errors. Also, not running the VBox service.

If there is anyone that can offer any advice that would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

I am having the same issue but on a physical machine. It's a DC Windows 2008 R2 SP1

    The error is

"The backup operation that started at '‎2012‎-‎02‎-‎08T09:55:52.823118900Z' has failed with following error code '2155347997' (The operation ended before completion.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved."   and it generates Event ID 517.

Its not a virtual system and as such dont have the registry keys qouted above....

Visited this site : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2182466, requested for the hotfix and tried to install it; but the system says its not applicable.  Think because of SP1 because I checked the versions of the two files replaced by the hotfix and I have higher versions.

    Any idea?

    Thanks

  • This is how we FIXED this problem and there are many fixes listed here:

    a) Our Fix:

    - Login to the server where Windows Server Backup runs

    - Check the Event Viewer Logs under Application Services -> Backup  (Operations)

    - If you have Hyper-V running, then go to the Hyper-V section under Application Services -> Hyper-V VMS (Operations).

    - In that log, it will states which VM is causing the error.

    - Login to that VM and check the Event Viewer logs. In our case it was SQLWriter causing it.

    - Solution is simple, batch a simple script on that VM and add it to Task Scheduler to stop SQLWriter few minutes before the backup starts and then start it up few minutes afterwards. (net stop sqlwriter , net start sqlwriter)

    - If you have a local SQL server on the server you're doing Windows backup, then this may need to be done.

    b) Other fixes reported by users:

    - from command prompt type: diskpart

    - from command prompt type: automount  and check if automount is enabled/disabled, it need to be enabled

    c) Another fix (not recommended in my opinion) only works if you have Hyper-V installed:

    - Disable VSS Writer for Hyper-V using the following:

goto registry on the server running windows backup:

    1. hklm\software\microsoft\windowsNT\currentversion\spp
    2. Add a new key as type reg_Multi_SZ
    3. Name for new key: DisabledWriters
    4. Value for new key: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de} (remember that yours may be different - run a vssadmin list writers to determine your value for the key)
    5. net stop wbengine
    6. net start wbengine

  • Have we figured out the physical server issue, was the a new thread created for a physical server version of this issue.  I have the same exact problem as you do except that randomly the backup completes.
