Windows 7 upgrade from Vista Home Premium 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit...partition question

Question
-
Hi.
I just received my DVD for windows 7 in the mail. I have two IMPORTANT questions. I am going to be upgrading from Vista 32 bit to 7 64 bit. My computer is set up as follows:
Partition 1 = C-Drive: My personal files such as music, documents, pictures, programs...etc 71.3GB free of 223GB
Partition 2 = D-Drive: Windows files which contain Vista files. 2.96GB free of 9.99GB
So my questions are: 1.) Am I going to lose all of my files on my first partition(C-Drive)????
2.) Am I going to need more space on my 2nd partition(D-Drive) to install Windows 7?
I will be installing Windows 7 by booting from the dvd. If someone can give me an educated answer I would greatly appreciate it. It would be impossible to get all my files back if I lose them...
Thank You in advance

You can NOT upgrade a 32bit os to a 64bit os, you'll need to perform a clean install.
For disk space requirements check this site: http://windows.microsoft.com/systemrequirements
It seems you need 20GB.
Don't forget about Alt+Esc!

Well the easiest way is backuping all your files.
Deleting both the c & d partition & creating two new ones. With one of 20 GB.
I would also recommend of using your c:\ as your system drive instead of your d:\ as best practice. So you would have a C of 20 GB & a D of 213 GB

I Have been reading that if I restart the computer and make it boot from CD, that I would be able to go from 32 to 64. The reason why they say you cant go from 32 to 64 is that If you just put in the cd, your 32 version of vista cannot read the 64 windows 7...
And about the 20 gigs? if mine is at 10 right now, how would I be able to make it larger??

Well I dont know where it is all you guys get your information. Microsoft themselves have said its possible.
Here are some other articles from people confirming that.

maybe you guys should be the ones asking questions. not giving answers. Except @wesleedb. Your answer was actually helpful.

You are either not reading the answer right or we mis understood your question.YES you can use the upgrade version of 64 bit W7 when you have 32 bit Vista installedBUT it will not upgrade 32bit Vista ....It will make a NEW installation and place your 32 bit Vistain a seperate folder called Windows .Old if you install it to the same partition.is that more clear???The term upgrade is usually used in reference to Over Writing an old installation with the new. This is not going to happen ..And yes you need way more space. 20 gb covers the installation and then there will be the neverending updates....that will require more space. You might consider installing another HD and using all of the old one for those programs ,personal stuff etcwhile using the new one for W7...maybe even partitioning the new one into 2 with the 2nd partitionfor all of those 64bit programs that you will no doubt be purchasing to support that 64bit OS.peter

Thank You,
Your answer was definitely helpful. You cleared things up for me.
Thank you guys for all your help. I apologize if I came off a little too harsh. I was just frustrated with this whole process Microsoft has us going through LOL.
