Domain controller - Windows 2000 to 2008 migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • We're running a singe forest/single domain in a small company. Currently have a primary and secondary domain controller, both running Server 2000. We just got a new server running 2008, which is going to be the new PDC. The old PDC is also the DHCP server, and both PDC and SDC are DNS servers. New 2008 box is also going to be the new DHCP and DNS server.

I apologize if this is a very general question, but I was hoping someone could give me a step by step for this migration. This is my first time doing something like this.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

You can refer to the following guide to upgrade the Domain to Windows Server 2008 AD DS:

Upgrading Active Directory Domains to Windows Server 2008 AD DS Domains

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731188.aspx

After you finish the upgrading operations, you can transfer the Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles to the new Windows Server 2008 DC by referring the following article:

How to view and transfer FSMO roles in Windows Server 2003

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801

To move the DHCP database to Windows Server 2008 DC, refer to the following article:

Move a DHCP database to another server

  • Hi,

Also remember to make the new Domain Controller Global catalog server, before demoting the old DC(s).

  • Hello Friends,

I have primary domain 2000 and secondary 2008, Due to some internal issue now I want to remove that primary domain server 2000 and secondary 2008 to be assign as main domain controller

I really apologize if this is general  question, but I was hoping someone could give me a step by step guideline for this migration.

    Thanks in advance

    Hello,

this thread is from 2009 and also marked as answered. So please create your own thread and do not hijack another one. Also use Terms that clearly state Domain Controller or Domain BUT Primary Domain is not clear, you can also talk about functional levels, so we must ask again what you are talking about. Additional post the used Service packs and the patch level of the domain controllers.
