Necessity installing client update after PS 2010 Feb CU RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Experts.

Now we successfully updated our farm with Project Server 2010 February Cumulative Update from RTM version. We use PS 2010 in Backward Compatibility Mode. And our Project Managers used both of version MS Project client - 2007 and 2010.

1.After that Project Server updates - MS Project Clients updates are required or not?

2.Far as this important and necessary?

     3. If answer is yes for both questions - we need to update both version (2007 and 2010) or update for 2007 version is not needed (for continue using BCM)?

  • Alexey, there is no technical necessity and your Project Manager can still use the client version they were using earlier.

Having said that, i would strongly suggest to patch your Project 2010 with the latest FEB Hot fix as well that would keep you updated with all the issued discovered and fixed so far.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Alexy,

1/2. Yes it is required, and also important.

MS Project client is the part of the solution for the end users, i.e. Project managers/team leads etc.. Although PWA 2010 lets us do scheduling through the web app, but you will not be able to perform all the activities which you able to do using MS Project client. Also few people, me included, prefers to use the Ms Project client over the proejct web app to manage the project.

If you have licensing constraint to use Ms Project, then only enable the limited number of users to use the Ms Project and let the remaining to do the scheduling through web app.

    3. IF you are in BCM state, then i suggest you to update both your client versions to keep them updated.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Khurram,

    Thank you for you answer!

You tell that yes it is required, and also important. But can you or something else explain more detailed why? I foresee a situation where our MS Project users ask me why it is needed or what would happen if I continue to use an older version of the client?

At this time our MS Project clients users still use 14.0.4751.1000 version and some of them use 12.0.6529.5000 for connect to our Project Server 2010 (with installed Feb 2011 CU).

  • Hi Alex,

ok it seems like we both are not on one track regarding your following point:

1.After that Project Server updates - MS Project Clients updates are required or not?

with update you mean update of MS Project 2007 to MS Project 2010? rite ?

assuming that this is what you meant:

MS Project 2007 can still work with Project Server 2010 in BCM mode enable. So which means its not neccessary but its important - you can browse the following article for the dis-advantages of using Project Server 2010 in BCM state for too long:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662496.aspx

Also see this to find out the detail new features of MS PRoject 2010, you can use this information to convience your client to opt for the newer version:

Hope this now help clear your thoughts?

"1.After that Project Server updates - MS Project Clients updates are required or not?

Not exactly. Common reasons to upgrade from 2007 to 2010 for a client I know.

What I do not know is - there is a technical necessity, that after update Project Server from 2010 RTM version to 2010 (with February CU - KB2475879) in a subsequent clients update (KB2496946) or project managers can safely continue to work for the client version 14.0.4751.1000 (RTM), while the server is updated to a more recent version?
