DPM & Deduplication - Free Space Not Released RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've set up DPM with storage that has deduplication running, as per the guide here:

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/dn891438.aspx

    Everything is working well except it appears that free space is not always being released and I'm not sure why, though a reboot of the file server resolves the issue. Output from a get-dedupstatus before and after a reboot;

    Anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this and how I can fix it without having to reboot?

  • Anyone?

    I'm still having to reboot the file server every month or so to release space. Not happening on other servers we have with deduplication enabled.

  • Hi,

    Try to run a scrub and a garbage collection on the volume:

    in a command prompt:

    For the garbage collection: ddpcli enqueue /gc /vol E: /scheduled /memory xx /throttle none /priority normal
    For the scrub: ddpcli enqueue /scrub /vol x: /scheduled /memory xx /throttle none /priority normal

    The "/memory xx" is the percentage of memory taken by the process while running.

    Hope this helps,
    Stephane

  • Garbage collection and scrubbing run once a week. I've done additional runs when we were low on disk space due to this issue and it didn't resolve it. Only solution at present is a restart.
