Incoming eMail, Host Unkown

    Question

  • Hello,

I'm trying to allow the incoming e-mail to a library/list on my SharePoint 2016 farm (SharePoint Server Enterprise) following this article https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262947(v=office.16).aspx

I installed the SMTP server features on my Windows server 2014 which name is SP-dev-2016.

In Central Admin, I set SP-dev-2016.company.com in the Incoming E-Mail Server Display Address section.

When it comes to try after allowing Incoming e-mail with my library "LibTest", I sent an e-Mail to LibTest@sp-dev-2016.company.com but it doesn't work and noticed me " Error 550, Host Unknown"

Do you have any idea ? After watching video/tutorial, it should have worked :/

  • Did you setup an MX record in DNS for SP-dev-2016.company.com as a mail address subdomain?

  • Hi Explose,

Make sure you refer to the article step by step to configure  incoming e-mail. You also need to do other steps except installing SMTP server.

I'm not SMTP expert but I believe that the error 550 is one of the most generic error codes.  I usually see that error when the recipient address is not valid.

Test whether the SMTP server is working. Here is a link to a Microsoft article on how to test mail connectivity from the command line.

Here is an article troubleshoot the 550 no such user here email error :

  • Using this tool https://mxtoolbox.com/, I found smtp3.company.com as a MX record

    I should put smtp3.company.com instead of SP-dev-2016.company.com ?

  • Hi Explose,

You can open Internet Information Services 6.0 Manager, you can check the SMTP mail server from here:
