Intermittent disconnections of SNA connections (HIS 2009) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

         Our setup is as below.

We have 2 HIS 2009 servers. The HIS client randomly chooses the HIS servers.

The Operating system is Windows 2003 R2 (32-bit).

Each server has 1 IP network adapter and 3 DLC network adapters.

Each server has 6 SNA connections sharing the 3 DLC network adapters.

The servers were working properly before 2 weeks.

But now we are facing intermittent disconnections on the SNA connections (PU)'s.

The connection goes Inactive, then into Pending and then automatically into Active status again.

This happens for all the connections at irregular intervals.

This is causing issues for the end users as their connection gets interrupted.

I did SNA tracing and could see some fatal error messages.

But I am unable to understand it properly.

I am unable to attach the trace files here.

I will provide the input as text.

Kindly request you to provide assistance in identifying the issue.

           Thanks in advance.

    -Kums.

  • The trace excerpt you included does show "LINK_NOT_TRANSMITTING_I_FRAMES" statements, so that does lead to the connection drops and then the reconnect attempts. Network traces as I mentioned will allow us to see what is happening when this occurs.

I just found a similar issue that a customer ran into when connecting via DLC to an OSA Adapter on their IBM mainframe.

In this case, the disconnection was initiated by VTAM. A DISC (Disconnect) was sent to HIS from the mainframe side. The DISC was due to the OSA adapter issueing a "Flow Off" and then discontinueing to send any more data. After reviewing the Timing Values of the OSA Adapter, it showed they were set to the maximum. The problem was resolved by resetting the Timing Values to the recommended defaults.

You may not be seeing the problem for the same reason, but thought I would pass that along.

    Thanks...

  • I see that you already opened a support case with the HIS Support Team, so I won't add much here. However, these types of issues where the DLC connection between the HIS Server(s) and the IBM host system drop and recover typically indicate some sort of network glitch. DLC is very timing dependent. The following Knowledge Base article describes the DLC connection timers that come into play:

129786 SNA Server and 802.2 connection timers (t1, t2, ti)
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129786/EN-US

It is possible that if you increase the timers listed above, you might be able to prevent the drops from happening.

Otherwise, we would need to see network traces (ideally on both ends of the network connection) that capture the timeframe when one or more connection drops occur. This is the best way to see what is happening on the network.

As an FYI, seeing trace statement with a Type = Fatal doesn't indicate a fatal problem. The Trace Types in almost all cases don't have any useful meanings as they were never really designed that way. For example, in a SNA Server service message trace, all the DLC Message data is of Type Fatal, even though no errors are being reported.

    Thanks...
