windows 10 on usb virtual drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a window server 2012 running hyper v. A virtual machine which is an external USB drive was added.  Now how do I install the windows 10 iso on that virtual (USB) drive (D).  It's been formatted to NTFS.  I don't want windows 10 to wipe out server 2012 on C and am scared to try it without professional advice. Any good advice (pros and cons) would be appreciated.

  •   When using the media creation tool, just download the ISO file to the host. Do not use the options to create a DVD or USB boot disk.

When you create the vm, use the option to create the VHDX file in a different location (on your external drive, not the built-in HDD).

You can allocate the ISO file to the DVD drive of the vm when you create it, or later from Settings for the vm. Check that the vm is set to boot from CD and start it.
