New Protection Group, Sharepoint not detected RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everybody, we are trying to configure DPM with Sharepoint 2010.
We have different farms and servers but for two of these farms we cannot protect them with DPM (and four others are working perfectly).

When trying to create a new protection group and expanding the Sharepoint WFE servers, Sharepoint is not listen (and not selectable).
We ran ConfigureSharepoint.exe" -EnableSharePointProtection on the WFE's and entered the Farm Administrator account and it ran successful.

In Dcom, The WSSCmdletsWrapper is running under the Farm account, The SharePoint 2010 VSS Writer is running under the Farm account and
vssadmin list writers is not showing any errors.

Server Specs: All Servers are Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, WFE's are Sharepoint 2010, DPM server is DPM 2010 with the latest patches.

    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated
    Robin

  • You're saying that SharePoint is not listed at all. In that case it looks like a SharePoint Writer issue. I would suggest you perform the following and see if it resolves the problem.

    1. Go to %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\14\bin\

    2. Run stsadm -o unregisterwsswriter. You should see the SharePoint Vss Writer getting disabled in the process. If not disabled, disable the service.

    3. Now run ConfigureSharePoint.exe and provide the farm admin credentials. The SharePoint writer should get started now.

Check if SharePoint is listed or not.

  • Hi, thanks for you're response, I forgot to mention that i already tried that.
When i unregister the writer the sharepoint service it is getting disabled and after i run configuresharepoint it is enabled again.

  • Robin,

To investigate further, are you seeing absoutely nothing in DPM Data Protection Wizard when you expand the server? Or are you seeing a SharePoint Node, but nothing to protect under that node?

Also can you do a diskshadow and then a list writers to get the writer metadata for SharePoint server? Does it show the Configuration Database, and the Content Datbases in the writer metadata? Paste the sample information about the Configuration database in this thread might give some idea.

  • Hi Deepan, thanks for you're response.

When i expand the server i see "All Shares", "All Volumes" and "System Protection" but Sharepoint is missing (see http://www.imagehosting.com/photo/sharepointmissing-1/next?context=album&albumId=6391464%3AAlbum%3A31343).

The Diskshadow output is listed below (some corporate descriptions are changed).
    ContentDB and ConfigDB are listed.
    Thanks!!!

  • just to make sure, are those two SharePoint Farms in a different domain than the DPM server? In that case you will not be able to protect them.
    Friday, April 29, 2011 9:49 AM
  • Hi Sroe, the machines are all in the same domain as the DPM server.
    Friday, April 29, 2011 11:19 AM
  • Hi Sroe, SharePoint protection across of domains is supported as long as the domains have two way trust. So that should not be the issue.

    Robin,

One last thing to try out. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\VssAccessControl check if NtAuthority\Local System has a value which is 0 or not. If its zero it means that Local System is not allowed to make Vss operations. In that case delete that value.

What I suspect here is some issue with Vss writer metadata enumeration due to which we are not seeing the Vss applications. I'm not sure how I can try this out, but I ideally want to do a diskshadow list writers under the "Local System" Credentials and see if we are still getting the same writer metadata output that you specified.

If that still says that metadata enumeration is fine, then I would get MS Support involved.

  • Hi Deepan, the account NtAuthority\Local System is not listed under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS\VssAccessControl, only the accounts i used for the farm, search and NtAuthority\NetworkService.

When i run the Sharepoint VSS Service under LocalSystem and run a diskshadow with list writers the writer "Sharepoint Services Writer" is not listed.
Probably the best way to go is to involve Microsoft Support.

    Thanks!
    Best regards, Robin

  • What I meant was running a process that performs Diskshadow list writers under the Local System Credentials and not making the SharePoint writer run as Local System.

Anyway, I think resolution of this issue is going to need a deeper look and its best to get MS Support involved who can help out better.
