Migration from MOSS 2007 PWA sites to SharePoint 2010 Sites (PWA will be not available in target) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Following databases involved in PWA server installation:

    •          Project Server data is partitioned into four databases - Draft, Published, Archive, and Reporting (these will be out of scope)

       ·          We are assuming that scope of migration includes migration of content from WSS Content DB only

We are looking for migration of only WSS configuration database and the WSS content database  from the PWA to SharePoint 2010.

Is it possible to migrate  WSS content database of MOSS 2007 PWA (consider our source)  to SharePoint  2010 site (our target, where PWA will be not available).

  • Hello Ramesh,

The manual process involved a combination of one of the of the shelf SharePoint migration tools (can't remember which one) to do the bulk of the non Project Server Project Workspace lists and other SharePoint data, then they manually created the lists that failed to create using the tool in each site that was still live. Once the lists were there they copied the list items over with a combination of excel and edit in datasheet.

  • Hello,

The WSS Content DB database upgrade will fail unless you have Project Server 2010 installed on the target SharePoint 2010 farm. This is because there are Project Server features referenced in that content database. You would have to migrated the project workspace site data to non Project Server Project Workspace sites in a non Project Server 2007 MOSS 2007 farm then upgrade that content DB to SP 2010. Alternatively you could look at a 3rd part tool that will just take the data out of the content database in 2007 and put the data into SharePoint 2010. Depending on how the tool works, you will still get issues / errors if it tries to export / import the whole lists as the list templates for Issues, Risks and Deliverables etc. will not exist on the SP2010 farm.

Either way, this is not simple at all. One of our clients wanted to do the same thing - it was a very manual process.
