Finding and removing IRM from documents in SharePoint 2007 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

We have a SharePoint 2007 Server and also have IRM enabled.

We are going through the process of trying to decommission this server and remove IRM off all content.
IRM has not been well maintained at all and due to things like turn over in staff, some files are unable to be open and in other cases have remained unable to be modified.

I have been handed the job of trying to fix this up, and just wanting to know is there any application or script that will list all files and documents that have IRM?
Or is there an easy way to remove IRM from files?

  • I'm assuming you mean files that have been protected manually (as opposed to files automatically protected by SharePoint, which would be easy to unprotect by just disabling IRM for the corresponding SharePoint library).

Decrypting protected files in bulk is easy: you can use the Rights Management Services Bulk Protection tool to decrypt all the files in a folder:

Now, the problem is that the tool only works on files in a local folder or file share, not on a SharePoint library. To address that you would have to either download all the files from SharePoint first, you can probably get around this by viewing the libraries over WebDAV, which would allow you to see the documents as if they were in a file share. You can probably build a script that runs over the "file share" view over WebDAV, then copy the file, decrypt it with the bulk tool and save it back to the original location.

You will require rights to decrypt the content in order to have this, and the easiest way to do this, assuming you are the administrator of the RMS cluster, is to grant you superuser rights. Be careful with that.
