cross-farm Sharepoint list sync RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a couple of Sharepoint 2007 farms. In the site collections where content is stored I have some looklists which I consider to be of dynamic and static content.

Those lists with dynamic content are farm specific whereas the static content lookup lists need to be the same for all farms.

I need to have a solution to synchronize the "static content" lookup lists with all farms. It do not need a two-way sync, it would be sufficient if was able to push list content from one farm to all the others.

    Example:

    - the list with document "classifications" need to be controlled from 1 farm and to be pushed to all the other farms in order to gurantee correct and consistent document metadata.

    Any ideas?

    Sven

  • What version of SharePoint 2007 are you using?

This is huge conditional but if you're licensed to MOSS Enterprise, you can consider a BCS for this.  What you'd do, is place your look-up in a SQL Table somewhere, and define a link to it via a definition file for each web application on each farm.  From here, you can create a column that'll look up into this.  It'll be a read only solution but as per your original post, that shouldn't present a problem.

  • Hi Sven

have you considered upgrading to SharePoint 2010?

Because what you are looking for sounds like the managed metadata column functionality which allows to share managed metadata between different farms. So instead reinventing the wheel upgrading to SharePoint 2010 might address your issue easier.

    Cheers,

  • Hi Stefan,

I know the service application architecture of SP2010 and that you can for example consume cross-farm managed metadata services.

Unfortunately upgrading to SP2010 is not an option here.

Maybe there is a 3rd party tool out that can sync the list content via webservices on a scheduled basis?

    Cheers
