How do you Regenerate and Replace boot images after upgrading the ADK? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to upgrade the Windows 10 ADK on my imaging server from 1703 to 1709. I have read thru a bunch of threads here and realize the boot images must be "regenerated" and "replace the old ones",  but I can find no specific instructions how to do this. Can you point me to such a resource that shows examples of how this is done?

    I appreciate your input.

  • @Mike,

Once you have uninstalled the previous ADK and installed the new, you will open MDT, navigate to your share, and then Update your Deployment Share.  Choose the option to completely regenerate media instead of just updating it.

  • Thank you Lawson,  do I need to copy the newly generated boot Wims to another location and overwrite the old ones?  I cannot remember the last time I did this it's been so long.

  • @Mike,

If you are using WDS, you will need to import them in to WDS to be able to PXE devices from the updated boot WIM file.

  • Thanks for the information everyone.  Regarding the 1709 ADK,  do I also need to upgrade MDT?  We do not have SCCM and are not running Enterprise servers.  The configuration I have here is MDT version 8443 and ADK 1703 on an older virtual Windows 2008 R2 Standard server.

  • @Mike, You don’t HAVE to upgrade MDT. I tend to upgrade so I can have the most up to date MDT for new updates Microsoft has provided as well as any compatibility for newer versions of the OS. LawsonT

  • Thank you again Lawson.   Do you know if my version of MDT (8443) supports Windows 10 1709 imaging as long as I have the ADK for 1709 installed?

  • @Mike,

Yes, you will need ADK 1709 to have full access to features while deploying Windows 10 1709.
