  • Hello,

There could be two possible answers to that problem:

(first, they moved you to the DPM forum but it is actually a VSS problem and not a DPM problem ;-))

    Answer 1:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine Cannot find anymore diff area candidates for volume...

The error basically means that the system doesn't have enough of a buffer to hold all write operations occurring during a backup.

You need to increase the area allowed to VSS to buffer such write operations.

On Windows Server operating systems you need to open the properties of one drive, such as C:, and open the Shadow Copies tab. Then select the drive and click Settings:Now you need to specify No Limit or at least 15% of the drive's size as a limit. Do this for each drive in your system and try to run the backup again

It could be that you need to do it as: (depends on the OS version)

    vssadmin list shadowstorage

    vssadmin resize shadowstorage

    Answer 2:

    Problem

How to Re-register Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Components on Windows 2008/Windows 2003.

    Environment

Do not follow this procedure to re-register the VSS writers if the customer is using DFSR replication.  It will stop the replication process

    Cause

VSS may not be working in one or more of the following ways:

    1. Volume snapshots may fail with errors, status will not be stable.
    2. Backups using VSS may fail.
    3. One or more VSS writers are missing when running the following command:

    • vssadmin list writers
    4. Using Backup Exec for Window Servers, backup jobs may:
    • fail with VSS or snapshot errors.
    • hang at snapshot processing.
    5. Using Backup Exec System Recovery, backup jobs may:
    • fail at 5%.
    • appear to be progressing, reach 90% or higher then fail.

    Solution

Re-registering VSS in Windows 2008 & testing is done in 2 parts:

Part 1 - Create and Execute a batch file named, FIXVSS08.BAT:
    Please note the following:

    • Run the batch file as Administrator.
    • This is only for Windows 2008, not for Windows 2003.

After running the .bat file, reboot the server to bring all of the writers into a stable state.
Copy and paste the following into Notepad, then click Save As and save it as FIXVSS08.BAT.

         rem FILENAME: FIXVSS08.BAT
