Installing Outlook on a new computer - moving .pst RRS feed

  • Question

  • Issue: Once outlook is installed on the new computer and the account set up I import the old .pst and get all the old mail and folders sans rules. This is all fine and good.

Problem: Once I connect to the mail server (Verizon in this case) I download all the mail again.

    Already tried:

    1. downloading from server first - issue: I lose all my folders

How can I import my .pst so I get my folders and email and then connect to the server without getting duplicates?

Why are you going through the exercise of importing anything when you have the option to use your existing PST file on the new computer?

Could you tell me where Outlook flags email as having been downloaded? Can't I copy that information into the new installation so that Outlook does not begin downloading mail that was downloaded prior to the reinstallation?

  • Go for Kernel for Outlook PST Repair Tool, an appropriate solution to issue you are discussing here.

  • I read the site on "how to move ..." and here is my dilemma. The client for whom I moved Outlook keeps all her email on both the server and the local instance of Outlook. That is she has the check box checked to leave email on the server after it is downloaded not delete it - so it exists in both places.

I installed outlook on the new maching and imported her old pst. This recreated her folder structure and imported all her old mail. I did this first because she wants all her folders intact. By importing before connecting to the server I can preserve her folder structure. She does not want to start over creating folders and moving mail. By the way, she moves mail manually she does not use rules.

Anyway, after I imported her old pst I created her account and connected to the server thinking that Outlook would "know" which mail was downloaded and only download new mail - that is - mail recevied since I moved Outlook to the new machine. Alas, not so, it downloaded all her mail again from the server and put it all into her inbox. So she had folders and inbox with duplicates.

The assumption I made was that the flag that tells Outlook that a mail item has already been downloaded was in the pst file somewhere and so once the old pst was imported Outlook would only download new email not old email. This was not the case. It downloaded all her email as if she were connecting to the server for the first time ever.

Where is the "token" kept? I should be able to install Outlook and import her pst and then connect to her email provider and not get all her email downloaded but only the new email. This person has 19000 emails so this is no small issue for her. She refuses to configure her email in any other way so I want to find a way to make it work.

To repeat an earlier question - why are you "importing" data from the PST file when all you need to do is use the existing one for her pop account as shown in the screenshot? Outlook is not going to know what the "source" of the "imported" data is so logic prevails that it would download everything again to a newly created PST file.

There is a big difference between "moving" the "correct" files from one computer to another versus using something that exists once a file is copied versus importing. Generally speaking, "importing" is not the recommended approach when migrating from one system to another - a step that serves no useful purpose in the current scenario.

If this is a PST file that has been around for a long time and is ANSI based vs Unicode based ANSI = a PST format description with "97-2002" in it) - THEN you would be well advised to run ScanPST against the Pst file on the old system followed by doing a PST2PST (assuming OL'2003 or later is in use on the old system). The exported file would then be copied to your OL'2013 config and used as the primary PST file for the account.
