On bootup, stuck at BitLocker RRS feed

  • Question

  • When going through the bootup system information gathering process, one computer gets hung at the BitLocker screen. I removed any references to that computer in the MDT database. I don't see anything system specific in the customsettings.ini file. I swapped hard drives with a PC that runs MDT just fine and the problem followed the computer. All devices are on the same network segment. I have included the last 100 lines of BDD.log. It will stay at the screen for days. Ideas?

  • Can you upload your bdd file on dropbox or skydrive so we can take a look?

  • Thank you! Please describe in detail your deployment process and where the issue is occurring.

Are you deploying via local media, pxe? Windows 7 or 8? Are you needing Bitlocker to be enabled or disabled? Any more info would help me out. I appreciate it.

  • Thank you! Please describe in detail your deployment process and where the issue is occurring.

Are you deploying via local media, pxe? Windows 7 or 8? Are you needing Bitlocker to be enabled or disabled? Any more info would help me out. I appreciate it.

I have never done anything with BitLocker, so it should be disabled. Not trying to convert a system with to without.

    Deploying Windows 7 via PXE.

I have installed straight Windows 7 from a USB just fine.

I have swapped the hard drives with a different system and tried an MDT boot on each (same model of PC) and the problem followed the PC.

I never get to the Welcome screen. It just gets stuck on BitLocker.

  • For some reason your log states that your computer registers a connection to MicrosoftVolumeEncryption and the property IsBDE is now False.

Check out your ZTIGather.wsf file in your deployment share and comment out this line and re-run it

    oLogging.CreateEvent 41000, LogTypeInfo, "Processing the " & oEnvironment.Item("Phase") & " phase.", oLogging.GetDiscoveryArray

Keith worked on this issue as described here

    https://www.mail-archive.com/mdtosd@lists.myitforum.com/msg00992.html

    Good luck!

  • WOW that was cool. I wish all the problems here can be shown like that!

I see it now as it is getting hung up on the bitlocker portion...Try commenting out the above on the ZTIGather.wsf...

If that doesnt work we will have to explore your bootstrap and customsetting file as well..

I try to be helpful to those helping me.

I commented out that line. No dice. I commented out the above section regarding Bitlocker...  no dice. It actually still did the BitLocker portion.

Working on your request for bootstrap and customsetting. I want to make sure to sanitize those.

  • Okay your bootstrap and customsettings appear to be fine. You have SkipBitlocker=YES which is great. Now, in your Task Sequence I need you to navigate under Preinstall group and REMOVE Enable BitLocker (Offline).. I believe this is the hold up. I currently have this removed and it does not process bitlocker when I boot initially in WinPE.....

I have removed BitLocker references from all Task Sequences for both Pre-Install and State Restore groups.

It's almost like it is ignoring what it is supposed to be doing.

  • Bitlocker is a red herring, the problem is that ztigather.wsf is stuck.

There are two possible root causes here:

    1. you have a problem with the event service. Try removing EventService from your cs.ini. (See my e-mail above).

    2. It's possible that you upgraded your deployment share from a previous version of MDT, and somehow the script files got out of sync. ( This is my default excuse for all mysterious problems :^).

Wouldn't those shortcomings rear their ugly heads on all clients, not just one? Maybe the EventService is hung on a previous install of that PC?

This has been MDT2013 from the beginning.

  • Maybe create a new deploymentshare(create a new one with the same settings) or regenerate the boot image? I say this because he has indicated skipbitlocker in CS.ini and removed them from TS and still gets stuck....
    Tuesday, August 12, 2014 4:42 PM
  • I had regenerated the boot image last night due to wanting to include PowerShell in it. It now no longer stops at the BitLocker screen. It now stops when it has completed processing the customsettings.ini.

    One PC works fine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkeYm8Toh8s

    The other does not: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPoy4Den5eo

I actually have another PC that makes it all the way through a deployment task fully automated from the database.

  • Okay that is good. Now, I have seen this happen before due to a bad hard drive...  Do you have a spare hard drive you can replace it with? Im trying to isolate the drive....

I swapped the hard drives between the machine that stops during the process and the machine that does a full deployment. The error followed the PC. I can install Windows 7 direct from USB on this problem machine.
    Tuesday, August 12, 2014 7:53 PM
  • Okay, so since you swapped the hard drive, it worked.. Can we conclude that its an isolated issue with the hard drive?

I believe I was misunderstood. "PC A" is the problem PC, while "PC B" is the one that installs several times per day (on purpose). "PC A" + "HDD B" stop at the same place. "PC B" + "HDD A" still install just fine.
    Tuesday, August 12, 2014 8:20 PM
  • I understand. Now get HDD B and place it in PC B. See if the install is successful.

Only *one* machine? Woah, that's a different diagnosis tree. :^)

    * First thing I would do is check this machine for any MDT installation left overs ( c:\minint directory is usually a good start ). Does it have a different configuration, like extra disks? Other OS'es? etc...?

    * Blow away the machine and try again. Does it still occur? (if not, could be leftover files).

    * Make the changes to the cs.ini ( I noticed that you ignored my suggestion above ). If it passes, I would investigate driver issues.

Yeah, I see where I was maybe less than clear above regarding it working on other PCs.

I have done a fresh Windows 7 install from a USB key, blowing out all partitions in the process. I have also used various Linux disk wiping utilities to remove all partitions, file systems, etc. It still installs Windows 7 just fine from USB and will take an MDT install when in another PC.

Not so much ignored as the other helper's suggestion got me past the immediate issue I had. I'll circle back and answer more of both of your questions later today when I can gather that information.

Commenting out EventService seems to have done it. Now why the Event Service doesn't like one PC...

  • Disabling and re-enabling the Event monitoring service didn't fix it. When it was disabled I took the liberty of deleting other PCs that were on the list, since they obviously wouldn't be updating properly when disabled.

  • If you are having problems with the event service on just one PC, I would check the networking driver you have installed for WinPE.   F8 --> type c:\windows\system32\wpeinit.log

They are all the same model of PC delivered at the same time, but I'll check that file out to see if it reveals anything about a different chipset being used.

I don't see anything obvious. When I'm at a command prompt I can ping the server and Google.

  • Something is missing here. Same model of PC, yet only one PC is stuck. :^( I can not entirely rule out hardware problems, or some *other* configuration issue with the machine.

As for the logs, yea, I can not tell what version of the i217-LM driver you have added to your MDT deployment share. FYI: the latest version from Intel appears to be e1d64x64.inf DriverVer = 06/12/2014,12.12.50.4.
