Problem with Micro SD card randomly "unmounting"/ ejecting? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an HP Elite X3 running Windows 10 mobile and it will randomly "unmount" the Micro SD card (sandisk). Is anyone else having an issue with this on Windows mobile and do you have a solution?

    Thanks!

  • Have you tried that card in other computers? Have you tried other SD cards in that computer?

If you can't resolve the issue that card reader can be disabled and an external card reader used which is not expensive.

Check with HP Support, doc, drivers, diagnostics, and ask about known issues in their forums.

Update the BIOS, chipset drivers, and the SD Card Reader drivers (sometimes in the Chipset drivers and sometimes separate). All of those can affect the SD Card Reader.

3rd party Antivirus programs can cause havoc with SD card readers - if you use one uninstall it and run its maker's Removal Tool to prevent leaving trouble causing remnants. Use Windows Defender which in Windows 8/8.1 & 10 is a full antivirus.

  • Sorry, I should have clarified that the HP Elite X3 is a smartphone. I formatted the micro SD card, but I am still having the same issue.

    Thanks

  • Hi. So many time it can happen with sd cards. you need to check this card in another device if same then you don't need to use it.

  • Since it is a phone you definitely need to contact HP Support.

  • What's the Win10 version running on this phone? Please report the version Settings->About->Device Information and then click More Info and then report the OS Build:

Can provide more details on SanDisk Micro SD card? What's the model? What's the size? What's the file system formatted? How much space is left based on Storage Settings(System->Storage)? Do you get any Storage Scan prompts after reboot?

Can you please mount this Micro SD in desktop/laptop and run CHKDSK to see what errors are reported?

Last but not least can you please file UIF feedback using Feedback Hub with title "8b26d285-9720-4565-9dce-2f15fd9513bd"?

    Thanks.

  • I too have had that problem since the purchase, one week ago.

Currently running 15063 insider build and the latest firmware.

Multiple people have reported the same issue on different MicroSD brands and different sizes, including one HP employee. Mine is a Sandisk 64GB V30. Brand new, formatted with the smartphone, never removed or used elsewhere.

HP have sent replacement MicroSD/Nano SIM trays. Solved the issue to none. The issue is known to HP since last year.

So far I have only had it eject while the screen is off (phone on) and it picks the card again upon restart.
