S2D Enable-ClusterS2D No disks with supported bus types found to be used for S2D RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have three identical SuperMicro 836E16-R1200B servers running Server 2016. I have replaced my RAID cards with LSI SAS 9211-8i HBAs in IT mode, and updated to the latest firmware. As far as I can tell now my drives are showing up correctly.

The validation report only fails on the unsupported media types for the 7 drives that are not detecting the drive type correctly. When I try to enable ClusterS2D, it is still telling me that there are no disks with supported bus type.

I've also tried to enable it manually so that I can fix the disk type later. It appears however that the -CacheMode Disabled and -SkipEligibilityChecks has been disabled in the GA version of Server 2016.

At this point I'm stuck! Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated.

  • So after I physically removed the "Unspecified" drives from the servers, the command completed normally and I'm up and running on S2D!!!

  • Hi Colin,

    >>I have replaced my RAID cards with LSI SAS 9211-8i HBAs in IT mode

Is it a RAID HBA controller?

If yes, it is not supported:

  • Hey Leo,

The HBA is one that can be flashed with either RAID or IT (Initiator Target) firmware. They are currently all three flashed with IT firmware, and they are reporting the BUS type as SAS, not RAID like it was with my previous cards.

  • Hi,

The issue seems strange and I suppose it may be related to the HBA. I checked the Windows Server Catalog, and found the device is not certified for Server 2016. Not sure if it could work with Storage Space direct, you may try to consult the technical support of the manufacturer.

  • It's odd that you have drives showing up as "Unspecified"...  what's the make / model of those drives?

They are Western Digital Black WD1002FAEX 1TB SATA drives.
