DPM 2010 Tape backups failing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We're having some issues with our long term protection to tape. Backing up to tape gives the following error.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

E:\ (SVR-SQL01.domain.local) DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052) 1) View and resolve all alerts for the library and its drive(s). Retry the operation after resolving the alerts.
    2) Go to the Library tab in the Management pane and click on Rescan. Once the rescan operation has completed successfully, retry the operation.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

-Steps I've followed to attempt resolving these issues:

    DPM->Management->Library->"Dell124t"->Action->Clean Drive is grayed out.

I've rescanned the library with the same results.

-When trying to do a detailed inventory I get the same error.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    Environment: Dell Power Vault DL2000 w/ MD1000 Disk & 124t tape with 7xLTO4 and 1 x Cleaning Tape

    Thanks in advance,

    Jared

  • Hi,

DPM is NOT seeing the physical tape drive inside the library - note the total drives - 0

In device manager, you should have "Tape Drives" entry in the tree - check it's state and driver information.

  • Hi Jared

In some cases a process can lock the tape-drive / tape-robot. Verify that you don't have any services locking the tape-drive. Please verify under Management that the tape drive and library shows up ok.

    Have you cleaned the drive?

  • Hi Robert,

The tape drive and library both show up under the management tab.

Clean Drive is greyed out under the Management->Action tab.

    Thanks.

  • It seems that all that can be done on the GUI of the Dell 124t is enable auto-clean. When auto-clean is enabled on the library, it causes a slot to show up as missing on the same library in DPM. (I was searching around most of the morning for that missing slot :-) )

  • Hi

I look around abit and find this: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pvdpm/en/SuppMatrix/dpm_supportmatrixA01.pdf

If look at the top of page 5 DELL is refering to a information update before using it with DPM2007 (it's probably the same for DPM2010). Is that applied?

    "Refer to the

PowerVault Data Protection Solution Information Update for important installation and usage information when using Dell-supported tape devices with DPM 2007"

PS. You must disable auto-clean on the tape library.

    Get back with your progress.

  • None of those worked.

I have auto-clean disabled. When it is enabled, one of the slots disappears from the library within DPM.

  • Anyone have any other ideas on why clean drive is disabled in DPM 2010 on Server 08 R2?

  • Hi,

Have you tried placing a cleaning tape in a slot- then marking that slot as a cleaning tape in DPM GUI ?

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399271.aspx

Once marked as a cleaning tape, perform a full inventory, then see if you can clean the tape drive.

  • Hi Mike,

I currently have a cleaning tape in slot 1 and it is mraked as a cleaning tape. When trying to perform an inventory, fast or detailed, gives the following error. As you can see on the 4th lin, it says before I can perform an inventory, it needs to cleaning. Thoughts?

    More information

Recommended action: 1) View and resolve all alerts for the library and its drive(s). Retry the operation after resolving the alerts.

    2) Go to the Library tab in the Management pane and click on Rescan. Once the rescan operation has completed successfully, retry the operation.

    Run tape inventory job again...

Resolution: To dismiss the alert, click below

    Inactivate alert

  • jared,

Are you saying that the drive shows correctly in device manager but does not show up correctly in DPM UI even after doing a rescan?

  • Hello Fahd,

The tape drive (Dell 124t) shows correctly in DPM and in device manager. Here is a screen shot of our library page (http://old.newspring.cc/it/DPMerror.JPG)

  • Jarad,

The library driver is not claiming the tape drive, so that is why the tape drive it isn't showing up under the library - you can try running the dpmdrivemapping tool.

    see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb795782.aspx

Stop the dpmla service then run DPMDriveMapping.exe from C:\program files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Bin folder.

    Net stop dpmla
    cd C:\program files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Bin
    DPMDriveMapping.exe
