Activating Windows Server 2012 R2 on Windows 2012 dc RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am looking for a way to activate couple of VMs (mostly Windows Server 2012 R2) created under Hyper-V environment of Windows Server 2012 Data Center edition. Can any one help me with that ? Thanks.

I get the following error (snapshot attached) when I try to activate using the AVMA key. I know AVMA is only supported under Windows Server 2012 R2 and onwards. But there must be a way to activate Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs created under HyperV environment of Windows Server 2012 datacenter edition.

  • You need to be running the full retail or OEM version of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, not Hyper-V server or the evaluation version.

  • its a fully activated Windows 2012 data center edition server (not the R2 version). The VM is windows server 2012 R2 standard version which I am trying to activate.

  • So there is no way to activate VMs created under Hyper V environment of Windows Server 2012 ?

If not then I would be forced to upgrade the existing Window server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2016. There is no third party application running but there are at least 10 VMs, almost all have Windows Server 2012 R2 OS.

  • AFAIK, you can only go backwards for server licensing, not to newer versions.

You can downgrade a 2012R2 or 2016, but there's no free upgrade to newer server OSes.

  • Thank for your guidance. My company has the data center license for 2016 as well but I was just hesitating in upgrading the whole hyper-v server with all the production VMs. Anyways if there is no choice then I need to plan it. Thanks again for your timely help, this information was not available any where.
