Update/edit own profile information (Self service)

    Question

  • Hi all,

we want that our users are able to change/edit (manage) their own ad profile information (like street, department, phone ...)

So I found a really easy way to do this:

    • Open Explorer/My Computer
    • Select Network
    • A new button appears called 'Search Active Directory'
    • Click this button and search for your user name.
    • Once found, right click your name, select properties.
    • Change the contact number and click the OK's
    • AD is updated. Admins can change anyones details, normal users can only change their own.

This works fine but some properties (fields) are not listed, for example mobile phone number.

Is there any way to show/display the missing active directory user profile fields for editing?

    Thanks,

    jupa

  • Hi jupa,
Based on my research, it seems that you are editing user profile which is synced to SharePoint, am I right?
If that is the case, please have a try the following article:
    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/tehnoonr/2010/11/22/mapping-user-profile-properties-in-sharepoint-2010-to-ldap-attributes/

And you could also post the questions in the SharePoint forum to have a try:

The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Thank you for your understanding.

Not sure about the SharePoint part, but try to assign self permission for the missing attributes and see if they become visible or not. Also if I am not mistaken, they can update their information via OWA in Exchange. So if you have Exchange it is better to check that out too.

There are other things you can do, like create a PowerShell script which asks them for their mobile number and in the background update the user account with provided number, or create a customized MMC and allow themselves to update their information.

Make sure to download my free PowerShell scripts:

  • Hi all,

we are running a local AD.

We sync the local AD every 30 minutes to the office365-cloud-profiles.

this is the reason we have to provide our users a solution that they are able to edit their own AD profile information on the local client pc (windows - not in sharepoint).

    thanks

  • Hi,
Please take a look at the following blog to see if it helps you: http://sharepointrepairjoint.blogspot.sg/2013/05/synchronising-active-directory-user.html

And in my opinion, since the problem is also related to Office 365, you could have a try posting it in office 365 forum:

Did you consider providing them with a web UI for that purposes? There are solutions that can give you much more control over what the users can see and do within the self-service portal. And it's also much more user-friendly than the option that you provide in the original post.

Here's a solution that can give you an idea what I'm on about: http://www.adaxes.com/active-directory_self-service.htm

  • Hi!

A web ui could be a good solution, of course! There are a lot of tools to buy but I really dont want to pay for it.

I can't believe that there is no way to let the users change their own (basic) AD-information.
