XP computer can't run login script so cannot map drive suddenly.

    Question

  • Our AD Server is running 2008 R2 Standard SP1. Recently, we found that almost all XP clients can't run the login script (using kixtart) suddenly. So these computers cannot map network drive.

After checked, one of the xp client's event log which listed below

    System Log
    Error:   netlogon  event id: 5719
    Warning: w32Time   event id: 14
    Error:   w32Time   event id: 29
    Error:   netlogon  event id: 5719
    Warning: DnsApi    event id: 11165

Seems not find the DC but I can ping this client.

    On Server DC.
DHCP, can't find this XP computer.
DNS both forward and reverse lookup, can't find this XP computer too.

Win7 computers are running normal and can map drive.

I ever tried ipconfig / registerdns on XP computer. Still appears the same error and warning.
    What happen? Please help.

    Many thanks.

  • Will your XP Computers login to domain, apply policies and map Network drives without running kixstart? I think troubleshoting kixstart is the last thing to do here, first find out is your Basic domain functionalities okay or not.

  • Found and solved the problem.

As we installed back the repaired firewall which was turned on dhcp server, XP computer can join the network but can't run the script. After turned off the dhcp server on firewall, xp can run the login script without any error and warning in the event log again.

For the apply policies, I ever tried but failed before.

Then I install the below hotfix. And can map network drives through group policies. now.

Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions for Windows XP   (KB943729)

    Thank you.
