C: Drive Locked by BitLocker (No Key Available) RRS feed

  • Question

  • After a restart of my Lenovo Thinkpad in safemode, Windows 10 will not recognize my password. Laptop is local. Not networked.  I am the sole user.

With use of an Ubuntu boot disk via USB drive, I could see Windows on the Thinkpad but cannot gain access.

Local computer business discovered that my C: drive is locked with BitLocker.

I have never initiated encryption nor locking with Bitlocker on this machine or any other.  I had never heard of Bitlocker before being told that my C: was locked.

I need to access important data on that drive.  PLEASE HELP.

    Additional Info:

I believe I have discovered the cause of the locking.

Apparently, many machines with Windows 10 preinstalled already have Bitlocker as part of the Windows software AND the drive already encrypted.

In my Lenovo User Manual, I discovered the following:

"If you are using the Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption feature and your computer has a Trusted
Platform Module, do not change the startup sequence. BitLocker Drive Encryption locks the computer
when it detects the change of startup sequence."

So now I need to find out how to get the Key that was generated when Lenovo installed Windows 10 on this machine.
