Can I convert a physical 2012 hyperV host to a virtual machine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I setup a new Windows 2012 Server as a hyperV host. Then I also created a new VM for a third party to install a big DB application on, but the vendor accidentally installed the application on the physical host instead of the designated virtual machine.

Since it would be a big ordeal to move the application to the VM, I am wondering if I can do a P2V on the physical host, then after it is a VM remove the hyperV role from it. Note I do not want to run hyperV role on the VM, just the physical host. Is that possible?

  • Hi

    1. You will have to disconnect the shared storage from the host .

    2. use disk to VHD tool (disk2VHD) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx .

    3. Connect the shared storage back and then create a VM from this VHD .

you will have to do a lot of changes to the VM . stuff like genereate a new SID , give a new name , new IP address etc . I strongly suggest you to not to connect to network until you've change the name and SID .

Microsoft virtual machine convertor is ready for Windows 2012 yet .
