Issue with search, Query machine has been taken out of rotation due to this error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Earlier today search has stopped working, after some checking I found that there was no query server assigned.

One server was only checked to Index content and northing else

No other server had the Office Search enabled on it.

We ended yp adding a query server but where did the one that was there go?

Is there any way an error could cause search to be removed from a server? and if so what caused it?

is this just human error and if so is there a way to check

here is the error I see

    Event Source: Office Server Search
    Event Category: Search service

  • I was able to solve the issue just by assigning a server to have the search component, the fix was easy

What I am trying to find out is how it happened?

How can a farm running for years sudenly not have search.

Can some action cause a search server to be removed from that role?

  • Try this in the below sequence:

    1. Add the SharePoint farm service account to the local admin group on all the servers in the farm.
    2. Add the WSS_WPG group to the Windows\Tasks folder by executing the command attrib –s %windir%\tasks
    3. Grant the following permissions for the WSS_WPG account on the Windows\Tasks folder: Read, Write.
    4. Restart IIS.
    5. Execute the following command: attrib +s %windir%\tasks

  • Glad this is resolved. It is not clear what deliberate actions may have caused this. If you restart the search service, the indexer for the SSP needs to be assigned again. As the issue is resolved, I will close this thread.

  • My question isnt how to solve it, its why it happened.

I am looking to see if some action can cause a query server to be unassigned
