Best hardware for DPM 2016? System requirements? Other 2016 questions.. RRS feed

  • We currently have a pretty old DPM 2012 server.. i think maybe 4 total cores between two older xeon processors.. along with about 20 or 24 bays of sata II drives that add up to around 30TB to protect 10TB of data..  we also have a DLT-S4 tape library which we are either replacing with an overland LTO7 unit or maybe going to azure cloud if the cost is right.

    I'm trying to see if we go to 2016.. what sort of hardware are most running these days to support this type of arrangment?

    I'm thinking something like a single 6/12 core cpu might be fine or dual 4/8's.. or even that might be overkill?

    Does the required space for DPM drop going from 2012 to 2016 (we go back 30 days for our retention)?

    Currently we use raid6 broken up into about 4 different raid sets.. would sticking with at least sataIII or sas still be fine for nightly syncs.. i'm assuming more than fine for a backup server.

    I cant seem to find the exact CPU/Ram requirements listed for 2016 itself.

    We typically build our own servers via supermicro chassis's, a raid card (expander) etc.

  • I really cant find any CPU or ram requirements out there for DPM 2016.. everything installed on the same box..

    Nor recommendations on at least the file server side.. going with raid6 vs raid10 etc.. raid10 a bit expensive for us.. our existing box is on woodcrest dual 2.0 ghz cpu's and about 4 different raid6 arrays with sata II and sata III drives (many of them 4TB in size at least).. giving us 30TB of physical space.

    I was leaning towards keeping the raid6 but maybe boosting to sas 12gb

    However i think some of this may depend on whether using modern backup storage (just discovering) and refs etc.
