  • Hi Sir,

You can not move (shared-nothing Live Migration )a clustered VM to another clustered/stand alone hyper-v .

I would suggest you to use hyper-v replica to move these VM :

    1. enable hyper-v replica broker for each cluster

    2. shut down VMs on 2012 then enable replica for the VMs ( from 2012 to 2012R2 )

    3. disable replica for each cluster

After this you will get copied VMs on 2012R2 cluster .

  • Hi Jingoi,

Do you have a new 2012 R2 cluster or are you looking to updated the current 2012 cluster? Do you have a requirement to keep all VMs live during the upgrade? Do you use SCVMM with any SDN?

If you have a new 2012 r2 standard cluster, you can just setup the necessary constrained delegation between the hosts in the two clusters and run shared nothing live migrations of VMs from one cluster to the other as long as vSwitches etc have been configured in advance.

If you are looking to upgrade the current cluster, you can perhaps build a temporary node and migrate the VMs to the temporary host, then upgrade the old cluster to 2012 R2. Finally migrate the VMs back and update the integration services version on each.

If you run SCVMM with lots of software defined networking it can differ...

Here is a set by step guide from MS of a two node cluster in-place upgrade NOT using SCVMM:

Overview of an in-place migration for a two-node cluster

The procedures in this topic describe the following process for upgrading an existing failover cluster to Windows Server 2012 R2 when only two servers are available.

    1. Create a new cluster from a node in the old cluster—You will evict a node from the old cluster; upgrade that server to Windows Server 2012 R2 and install roles, features, and any needed software; prepare storage for the new cluster; and then create the Windows Server 2012 R2 failover cluster.
    2. Copy the cluster roles to the new cluster—Use the Copy Cluster Roles Wizard to copy the clustered roles and features from the old cluster to the new cluster.
    3. Perform post-migration tasks—Make existing data and files available to the new cluster; if you migrated to new storage, you will need to copy the data and files to the new storage location. Then bring the new cluster online, and verify that the migrated cluster roles and resources are available and are performing as expected.
    4. Add the second node to the new cluster—First, you will destroy the old cluster. Then you will prepare the remaining node for the new cluster as you did the first node. Perform a complete set of cluster validation tests to validate the configurations of both nodes. Add the second node to the new cluster. Then configure quorum settings on the new cluster.
    5. Verify failover for the migrated cluster roles—After you add the second node to the new cluster, you can verify that the migrated cluster roles fail over successfully, and you can troubleshoot any issues with failover.

    Kind Regards

  •  We alreaday  have new 2012 R2 Failover Cluster Setup. we have simple VM and few Cluster Virtual machines inside the Hyper v 2012 failover Cluster , want to know how to migrate Cluster Vitual machines, is there difference between migration of simple and Cluster virtual machines migration.. or it is same procedure of migration as simple machines...

We use Cross version live migration process..
