Asked by:
Search from the Home Page

Question
-
We have created multiple SharePoint sites, and users get to each of these sites from our Home page (eg, https://mydomain.sharepoint.com/sites/Home). Users, naturally, want to go to this page to search for files across our entire SharePoint tenancy; however, as people here will be aware, the Search only works on the this one site. It offers to expand the search to all of SharePoint, but we'd like it to always search our entire tenancy. Is this possible?
Thanks

Hi,
I suppose that you are using SharePoint Online.
Are you using the modern experience or the classic experience?
If you are using modern search result page (/_layouts/15/search.aspx/), by default, it will search at current site. User needs to click your organization to search everything in your SharePoint organization.
If you are using the classic search experience, a search center, you can configure search navigation in Site settings -> Search -> Search settings, make the “Everything” as the top one. Learn more about Search Center.
Best Regards,
Linda

Thanks, but I've set it to 'Everything', yet it's still retuning no results. It only searches this one site. It won't search our entire tenancy.
PS: I tried to upload a screen-capture, but it says I can't upload images until my account is verfied? I've been a member since 2014, so I'm not sure why my account isn't verified?

Hi,
You have set the “Everything” as the first search page for the classic search experience. This setting is not for modern search. Per your screenshot, you are using the modern search experience.
When you are using modern search result page (/_layouts/15/search.aspx/), by default, it will search at current site. User needs to click your organization to search everything in your SharePoint organization.
Please click on “Organization” to search “GDPR”, see if you can get the results.
Best Regards,
Linda

Thanks for your response, but how do we always get SharePoint to search the 'Organization' by default. We don't want users to ALWAYS get no results and then have to click 'Organization' to get the results they originally searched for.
We need this to always default to 'Organization'. Is this possible?
Thank you
Brian

Hi,
No, currently, it is impossible.
By default, it will search at current site when using the modern search experience. User needs to click on organization to search everything in your SharePoint organization.

Hi Linda
But this doesn't answer my question. Unless the answer is that there is no way to ever get SharePoint to Search the entire tenancy by default. Is that what you're saying: SharePoint can't be configured to search the tenancy---it will always seach the current site by default?
If so, that seems a major failing. There must be thousands of organizations who have a Home Page and who want their SharePoint installation to always Search ALL the SharePoint sites in the tenancy from the Home Page.
