User unable to see all folders while on VPN

Question
-
File server runs Windows Server 2012. Access Based Enumeration is turned on for the file share. Users are added to global groups. Groups are given modify access to appropriate folder(s) within the file share.
Users in the office can see only the folders in which they are members of the appropriate groups.
One user, when connected to the office network via VPN can see only one folder, not all of the folders he can see while directly on the network in the office. He is using the same laptop in the office and outside and he connects to the VPN using his domain ID and PW.
Any idea why he can see only 1 folder in the share while on the VPN but while in the office he can see all of them (that he has membership for)?

A co-worker of mine worked on the problem and found that there was a problem in the user's offline files. He deleted the local cache of offline files, then allowed it to be rebuilt and then the user could see all of the folder in the shared drive when he was connected via VPN. I'm not sure I see the connection but I'm glad it's fixed.

Hi Jonathan,
Have you ensured the users are using the FQDN of the required share?
E.g. \\server.domain.local\foldershare instead of \\server\foldershare
I have had issues in the past where they don't work without this.

The user doesn't have a problem getting to the shared folder. He maps to it just fine. But when he opens the shared folder, there are 4 folders (out about 8) that he has access to that should show up. But he can see only one of the four. Since Access Based Enumeration is enabled on the share, when users map to the share they can only see the folders in it in which they are members of a group with access to that folder. That is why he can see only 4 of the 8 folders when he's connected at the office. But he should see the same thing when connected via VPN while outside of the office.

How do you delete the local cache of offline files, then allowed it to be rebuilt? What folders and where? I have several people with this same issue with everyone home due to coronavirus.Monday, March 30, 2020 11:14 PM
