SCOM 2012 R2 upgrade to 2016 - Agent compatibility RRS feed

  • Question

  • After upgrading from SCOM 2012 R2 to 2016, can the old agent (version 7.1.x) continue to communicate with SCOM 2016?  This would give us time to update all of the SCOM Agents.  Thanks

  • Hi APang.F1.
You have two solutions for migrating to SCOM 2016.

    [First]
You replace all SCOM 2012 Agents with SCOM 2016 Agent, but still using the SCOM 2012 Mgmt Server.
You replace the SCOM 2012 Mgmt Server with SCOM 2016 Mgmt Server then you modify the mgmt grp info on each agent.
Both Agents replace and mgmt grp changes can be easily done remotely.
This is the solution I adopted.

    [Second]
You replace the SCOM 2012 Mgmt Server with SCOM 2016 Mgmt Server then you modify the mgmt grp info on each Agent still SCOM 2012.
You replace all SCOM 2012 Agents with SCOM 2016 Agent.
Both Agents replace and mgmt grp changes can be easily done remotely.

    [Further info]
SCOM Agent 2016 talks with SCOM Mgmt Srv 2012? YES! I tested it some day ago.
SCOM Agent 2012 talks with SCOM Mgmt Srv 2016? YES! I tested it now (actually 1 minute ago).
SCOM Agent 2012 is version 7.1.10184.0

  • The recommend sequence of upgrading SCOM from 2012 R2 to 2016 under distributed management group are : the management servers first, followed by the gateways, operations consoles, and then agents. So in principle, SCOM 2012 R2 agent supports to report SCOM 2016 MS.
