USB drives, ipod and Vista home premium

Question
-
I have vista home premium edition initially installed on an upgrade from XP MCE then we completed a fresh installation. I'm having real problems with USB drives & ipods. The system is detecting that a new device has been installed and installs the drivers, then in comes up with the error saying that it is unable to install the drivers as the parameter is incorrect. In device manager the information reads:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
The parameter is incorrect.
Wierdly 1 out of 3 usb devices works and I have managed to get my ipod to install once, it now won't recognise the other ipod I have (same message again). I've tried changing where vista looks for drivers to the system32 file and a couple of other ideas I've found posted on helpsites but none have worked.
Please let me know if you have any ideas to resolve.
Thankyou

I'm having the same problem. I could not get my ipod connected to my computer, worked at it for three hours. Finally, I tried a different USB port and itunes connected to the ipod, everything looked good, then VISTA started complaining that it was unsuccusful at installing a driver. WTF, Its WORKING. then, poof, ipod disconnects and wont reconnect. Anyone find a fix for this one?

I am having this problem in XP.
The first time I plugged in the usb cable with my camera in the other end, windows recognised the new hardware and installed the usb stuff.
then after I unplugged it once, windows wouldn't recognise the usb or camera again.
I shut down, restarted but still doesn't work.
any ideas(where did the crying smiley go??)

What is strange to me is that I own a 60 GB Ipod, have for a year and a half and just bought the 160 GB one and I can hook up the 60 just fine, disconnect it safely and when I connect the 160 it acts like its never seen it before. Is it not the same drivers or what? Doesnt make any sense to me why it doesnt work nor find the right drivers for it.Saturday, September 22, 2007 3:31 AM

Ditto here as well. Vista just stopped seeing the Ipod drivers. In my case it happened after the last wave of MS updates and installation of Office 2007. So far, I have found no solution from MS or Apple.
There are going to be a LOT of unhappy Vista/Office/Ipod users out there this holiday season.

I am having the same problem with the ipod, I am running Windows XP home and the ipod shows up under device manager under the Universal Serial bus and is working. I can enable and disable the ipod and the drivers show up and the message windows under properties says that the device is working. Still I have an ipod listed under other devices and there is an !! over it. in the message window it has an error 28 and says there is no drivers for this device. I try to install or reinstall drivers and the install wizard cannot find the needed drivers. I tried to direct it to window/system32 and that does not help, it still says that the drivers can not be found. Please anyone HELP!!!!Saturday, December 29, 2007 4:31 AM

i tried the solution listed above and all got was another error message.
Windows found the driver software but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
The system cannot find the file specified.
I'm starting to get really annoyed now cos it means that i cannot update my ipod. so far i am very very very unimpressed with vista the OS obviously was not ready to ship and needed to be tweaked a hell of a lot more prior to general release...once again microsoft release a shoddy unfinished product.

Hi,
I seem to have tried everything...
Rebooting Vista, about 6 times.
Redirecting drives to look in system32 and some other one.
Messing around copying and pasting files.
I finally downloaded this program ErrorSmart. By then I had messed up my computer so bad that it had about 150 errors in the main files. The program fixed my computer but not the drivers.
I finally got upset and pulled my computer out and plugged my iPod in the back. It finally worked!!!! Hooray!!!
The only problem is that I only have one usb port available back there not to mention it is a pain.
None of my front ports are working including all of my little slots, sd/mmc.
How do I fix It???
I am desperate!!! I have spent about 10 hours in total trying to fix this mess!!! I hate Vista!!!
Please, Please help me get my computer back.
Thank You,

Hi Everybody,
I have an IPOD problem on Vista - (sp1 Home Premium). Its a relatively new quad core DELL machine and my IPOD (Classic 160GB) works on my XP laptop. I also have a nano which has the same problem on the Vista machine. This is a recent problem as both IPODs worked well at one stage so something has changed in one of the updates.
When I open the device manager in Vista, I see that the USB Mass Storage Device with a code 10 problem - This device cannot start.
Does anybody have a simple solution to this problem ?
Thanks in advance.Tuesday, October 7, 2008 5:24 PM -
I am having the same problem. My Dell laptop with Vista stopped recognizing my USB for my iPod Shuffle. Dell fixed it. Twice! The third time, they suddenly had no idea what I was talking about. Dopes. I think it is just a driver that needs to be installed. Apple was no help either. I tried the C:\windows\systems32. thing No luck. My kingdom for a simple driver!

I bought a new computer!

I have an HP Pavillion with windows xp.
My hard drive crashed and I got the original disks for HP to reinstall everything. Now when I plug in my IPOD Nano it says it installs it and nothing comes up.
I tried unintalling/reinstalling the USB but that did nothing.
Sigh...
Any help would be appreciated!Sunday, December 21, 2008 10:57 PM -
Hi Alex, thanks for the help. It really worked for me. Right Click on MyComputers --> Properties --> Device Manager --> USB -->Apple-iPod --> Update Automatically (if automatically doesnt works, manually)
