File reverts to "Read only" after opening it for editing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I use Project Server 2013.

Some users have reported that their project files change to a status of "Read only" in the middle of editing. These are the steps that they follow:

    • Open file for editing
    • Make a few changes
    • Save file.

At this stage the file shows as needing to be checked out in order for the changes to be saved.

How can the status change to "Read only" when it had already been checked out for editing?

  • Thank you for the reply.

I'll comment on what you wrote:

    1. network issue - this is probably the cause, but it is strange that it only happens to a few users and not to everyone.
    2. Project client is losing the connection to the server - this could happen if the file is left overnight. We have seen cases where someone opens a file from PWA for editing, starts to edit it and within one minute, the file reverts to a status of checkin.
    3. Opening a delegation session - not applicable in any of the cases that we have seen as the user didn't open a delgation session.

We removed and re-installed MS Project and this seemed to solve the problem.

  • Hi,

It is probably due to a network issue: the Project client is losing the connection to the server for some reasons (network issue, wifi issue). Opening a delegation session from PWA might also cause this issue in Project Pro.

    Hope this helps,
