Cross reference in an index entry to another index entry RRS feed

  • Question

  • 1. Suppose in the index I have the entry "dog." I would like one of the sub-entries to say "see animals." I've done this but forgot how.

    2. Suppose I have more than one index, for example "Names" and "Subjects." (I finally know how to create multiple indexes.) Suppose under Names I have "Einstein, Albert." I want it to contain a cross reference to the Subjects index, for example "see relativity," and under "relativity" I want a cross reference to Einstein, Albert in the Names index.

Tips will be appreciated a lot.

  • 1. In the Mark Index Entry dialog box (Alt+Shift+X), use the "Cross-reference" field. If you are editing an existing XE (index entry) field, add a \t switch.
To see XE fields, display hidden text in Word. You can use the ¶ button on the Home tab (to display all nonprinting characters).
    2. The same principle applies here, that is, you will have to add the cross-reference manually (assuming that I have correctly understood what you are trying to do).
