Site Backup and Restore Update absolute URL inside documents RRS feed

  • Question

  • My question is about SharePoint 2007. I am not sure if this is the right category. Please suggest the right location if this is wrong.

    Here is my question:

I am taking a backup of a site collection and restoring in a different location.

    eg., Source: http://sampleDomain.com

           Destination: http://targetDomain.com

I have a word document in a document library within the source say,http://sampleDomain.com/mydoclib/testword.docx

I also have a hyper link within my "testword.docx" file to link "http://sampleDomain.com/otherdoclib/doc2.docx"

When the backup is restored to a new location, the URL of the document will be, http://targetDomain.com/mydoclib/testword.docx and it is also updating the hyperlink within the document to "http://targetDomain.com/otherdoclib/doc2.docx"

So, does SharePoint 2007 has capability to update hyperlinks during backup and restore? We have observer the same behaviour for Excel file as well. If so, Could you please share any reference which give us complete picture of this functionality, we can get a clear picture what gets changed when doing a backup and restore?

    Thanks in Advance.

  • Hi Arun,

SharePoint Backup restore only changes metadata property and that why the file location will be updated with the destination server.

All data inside the file will remain as it is and you have to manually change it (i.e. hyperlinks)

    hope this helps.

  • Hi Pratik Vyas,

Thanks for the response. But, when we tested this, we could see hyperlinks within the documents are getting updated. The document's modified date remains the same as source and no new versions created.

    Thanks and Regards,

  • I'm having to agree with Pratik on this one.  Any STSADM backup/restore that I've done will change relative links in web parts, lists and so on, but anything like hard built links within Content Editor Web Parts often have to be changed manually.

I'm wondering if your word document is updating its links via Quick Parts.  Haver you replicated this across any other Office Applications?

  • Hi Steven,

As you have mentioned, We have experienced the same in past for Content Editor web parts and Site Navigations created with hard build links.

But, for Word document and excel document (office 2007), we noticed the change in URL (Hard Build) within the document. Of course, it is surprising, but now we are looking for some documentation which can confirm this.
