SQL PowerPivot 2013 for Excel x Excel Services 2013 performance comparison in Project Server 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am working in one box configuration using SQL 2012, PS and SPS 2013 on Windows Server 2012. Using MDX I created some customized fields in the MS_Portfolio_Analyzer cube for Cumulative Cost and Cumulative Baseline Cost. Then I created a time table report using Excel Services 2013 which was pretty fast. Let's say about 3 seconds. After that I created the same table using the design section of the PowerPivot for Excel 2013. It took about 30 seconds to do the query.

My question is, in the case where the table or graphic report query is simple, is that normal the PowerPivot has a performance so bad compared with Excel Services? Or am I doing something wrong?

    Thank you.

  • That a good question, but not enough detail to determine the performance difference.  As you know their are many factors involved with performance.  Part of this may be if indexes are properly setup, how the cube is built, etc.

Sounds to me like you found the solution by using Excel services.
