Windows 8/8.1 Templates to deploy GPO from Windows 2008 R2

    Question

  • I've downloaded the ADMX files for Windows 8 / 2012. However, when I try to implement any of them on my 2008 R2 DC, it fails. Can this be done? Ideally I'd like to deploy Xp/7/8/8.1 policies from the 2008 R2 server.

  • Where did you copy the new ADMX/L files to on that 2008_R2 box. In general, I advise folks to manage GP on the latest version you plan to target. This means if you are deploying to everything up to Win 8.x/2012-R2 systems then you should manage GP from a Win8.x or 2012-R2 system. It's not a hard requirement but I find you get consistently less problems that way.

  • You haven't said what fails or if there's an error? Do you have a central store setup?? Just copy the templates over to the central a store including admx and admx if you do. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929841

  • I never see the new options (e.g. Computer COnfiguration, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, Personalization)
