Exchange 2007 - Need help with recovering deleted entire Databases that contained mailboxes RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Accidentally I dismounted then deleted 3 databases that I THOUGHT was empty. It was empty when I looked, but what I didn't realize is that had I changed the Recipient Scope when looking for mailboxes, I would have selected a sub-domain in our environment to search against. Apparently, in that sub-domain was where many mailboxes were attaching to this database.

    Big mistake! :(

As of now, I do happen to have a recent back up of the .edb, .chk and log files that existed for this database.

I still have the Storage Group containers in the Exchange console. they're just each missing each database I deleted.

So my question is, how can I restore these .edb databases back to the mail server, so that all the users can start accessing their mailboxes again?

I'm a bit confused on the "Recovery Storage Group" and linking to Storage Groups. I'm not sure if that's what I need to do.

I just don't know if I NEED to restore these databases back to their original names and how I can do that as to not interrupt and help continue connectivity for the users who will be needing access to their mailbox.

Can I not just create a new database in Exchange, give it the same name as the one I deleted, then dismount it and copy over the .edb and .log files from the backup, then try re-mounting it? Would that cause a problem?
