Win7 Long Login Times RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our Win7 Enterprise computers are experiencing long login times or not logging in at all. They get "stuck" at Welcome, applying computer settings or applying user settings. We reimage, in a couple days it returns. We have updated all Win7 computers to SP1. We believe it has something to do with WMI and high CPU usage.

We tried turning off WMI. We realized it was not a good thing to do, but it was to test. The dependencies were:

    1. SMSAgent Host
    2. MOM
    3. Security Center
    4. IP Helper

    Other options we tried:

Local profiles have been deleted including registry. We have scanned computers for virus'. We have reset the WMI repository using winmgmt.exe with the reset option.  The high CPU on SVChost reappeared after 2 minutes of reseting the database even after resetting the local policy. Also noticed there is a high number of Scheduled Tasks. We only have 3 tasks that we send to the computers. Tried Safe Mode. Gets stuck at Welcome. Then errors with, "An attempt was made to login, but the network logon service was not started".

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

follow my guide [1] to make a boot trace and compress the boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl as 7z or RAR and upload it to your Skydrive [2] and post the link here.

I take a look at the trace, maybe I see what's wrong with your Windows.

  • I'm not sure if Super Andre is around.  I recommend turning on 'verbose' boot and login messages:

    reg add hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system /f /v VerboseStatus /d 1 /t reg_dword

If you're hanging at 'applying user settings', this is the workaround:

    sc config http depend= cryptsvc

As far as I know, there's no windows 7 patch for this problem.  Here's where I got the workaround:

"A computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 stops responding and hangs at the "Applying User Settings" stage of the logon process":
