What is the recommended/best process in moving SharePoint 2013 from one domain of Azure tenant to another domain of Azure tenant? RRS feed

  • Question

  • There is one unique scenario we are facing, where we have SharePoint 2013 on Azure along with SQL too. We have 2 WFE, 2APP and 2 SQl in Azure of domain called xyz.com.

Scenario 1:We need to migrate/move them(SP2013) to New Azure tenant which has a different domain name called ABC.com, however we still gonna move XYZ.com vanity domain to new Azure tenant (kind of additional domain to ABC.com). Here Users will still login with XYZ.com only (old domain).

Can someone please help me to outline the steps. Will it work if I create brand new farm and deoploy all solutions and then sync users with UPS? but can we fix permissions? users will still use same ID, but in new azure tenant.

Scenario 2: We need to migrate/move them to New Azure tenant with new domain called ABC.com. Here users will get new domain address as login. Can anyone of you please guide all the steps in this situation?

  • If you're changing Active Directory domains, you need to build a new farm and migrate the content (databases). Is the Active Directory or AAD DS migration part of this?

  • @Trevor

Yes that's true AD and AAD will be migrated to new Azure tenant so users will still have user ID  with same domain address to login to any app or SharePoint.

I am still keep this domain at new tenant, then what are the key steps that I need to follow in moving content and applying permissions properly.

Note: we don't have Mysites, so a bigger headache is gone.

  • Sorry, to clarify my question -- will the existing AD domain (that is, Active Directory Domain Controllers) be migrated to the new Azure Subscription, or will you be implementing a brand new Domain/Forest?

  • Trevor Seward,

We are migrating AD to destination and we are not implementing any brand new domain there.

Source XYZ will be migrated to destination and at destination they will have two domains which are XYZ.com and already existing domain called ABC.com. Newly migrated users will still needs to be able to access SharePoint on Azure using XYZ.com after the move.

Please let me know if I have answered your question or not. Sorry If I make this confuse.
