How to reset/edit Alternate URL Collection? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi I mistakenly changed the Alternate Site Collection URLs.  Now the Sharepoint Pages are not loading.  I cannot get into the Administration page.

When I tried to access AlternateUrlCollections.aspx

    I just get "Unknown Error"

How do I go about resetting the URL collection?

  • James,

Do you mean you changed in AAM's? and if you cannot access AAM page that means you edited the Central Admin URL?

  • I am completely new to SharePoint.  It was setup by someone else.

So I am not sure what the abbreviation means, but here is what happened.

In the server eventviewer log said that I should add an URL to the AlternateUrlCollections.aspx.

So I follow the link and tried to add it.

Now the Administration Page doesn't even load.  Neither does the SharePoint pages.

I am not sure how to reset it back to default since I cannot even access AlternateUrlCollections.aspx to restore it.

  • Got it, go to IIS and try to browse the Central Administration (right side panel will have browse) from there (it will browse with local host and port number which is fine) if you can get in using that, you can revert back the change what you did , if not please post here what was in the event viewer logs.

  • Browse gets the "HTTP 404 Not Found" Error.  I think a default page is never setup for it.

Trying to access "http://localhost:27674/_admin/AlternateUrlCollections.aspx" gives an empty page with only the line "Unknown Error"

According to the Event Log the Error Reporting is not setup right

Information: Event ID 5000 (Windows SharePoint Service 3 Error REporting)

There is also another Error,  which was the original error code that I tried to fix.

  • James,

When you install SharePoint , it will create Central Admin, there is no way that site is not created, what I understand is "http://localhost:27674" this is you central admin site.

If you cannot browse to that site, please give a try with http://servername:portnumber.

Please try above things in application server not front end server (if you have 2 SharePoint Servers make sure you login to the server where first SharePoint is installed).

if nothings works then try to SharePoint config wizard but make sure you are NOT disconnecting the farm if you see that option in the wizard instead choose connect.
