unable to export a PST file using Exchange management console in Exchange 2007 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have tried to export a mailbox to a PST file by using the following command:

    Export-Mailbox -Identity kwalters -PSTFolderPath c:\dload\exmerge

I am doing this from my own XP (32 bit) computer with Outllook 2007 client installed.

I am receiving the following error message:

Export-Mailbox : Error was found for Kim Walters (kwalters@domain
.com) because: Error occurred in the step: Moving messages. Failed to copy mess
ages to the destination mailbox store with error:
MAPI or an unspecified service provider.

  • I think that is where the error is: since by default both Domain admins and also Enterprise admins will not have Send as and Receive as permission on the mailbox store. Take a look here:

  • Yep. In fact in this case being a domain admin causes a specific deny against having mailbox access.

We always use a specific non-privileged utility account for doing exports and imports.  Makes it easier to deal with the permissions over the long haul and not end up with crazy things showing up in ACLs and logs and such.

  • I had to give myself permissions to the mailbox.  In Exchange Management console I went to the recipient mailbox and under the properties there's a Permissions tab and I gave myself Full Access to it and then it worked fine.

  • I looked at that but I'm a domain admin and an Exchange Organization Administrator.
