Upgrade files from MS Project 2000 to MS Project 2010 problems RRS feed

  • Question

  • We just bought and installed 2010 to upgrade I simply opened my files in 2010 in the compatability mode and then saved them in 2010.  I have experienced several problems.  Resource assignments have been scrambled in all the files.  Visual Reports errors out with and "unknown error".  There are files that take several minutes to print a seven page report.

I unscrambled the resources and lo and behold when I reopen the files they are back to being scrambled again just as before.  Since it is acting like nothing saves I performed a test to prove the files are saving and they did open just like I changed them to test.  When gives?  Does anyone have any ideas?  Since I am dealing with a portfolio of 20+ individual project this is getting very work intensive.

The other issue I have discovered is that changes I make to the global file don't seem to be saving either.  I am at my wits end............

  • Hi Dave,

I think you will have less problems if you always install the earlier version of Project first.  So I suggest you uninstall any versions of Project you have and re-install them from the earliest to version 2010 last.  Don’t forget to install the Service Releases on the way.

  • Dave R L -

You have tried saving Project 2000 file format file in Project 2010 format, and observe the data is scrambled.  Looks like the file format is not correct. Try saving the Project 2000 file in XML format (Save as Type: XML Format) instead of saving it in Project 2010 format. Close the current plan, and open the XML file in Project 2010. It will show Project Import Wizard. Choose New project and click Finish.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello Dave,

Please let us know the prior version of the Project you were using. Also are you using Office 2007 or 2010? Are you using the shared resources in your plan? Please let us know then we can work further to troubleshoot.

  • I found out that it was a file association issue.  If you have multiple versions of Project on your computer there are regristry settings that have to be voided and reassociated with Project 2010.  Once that is done you are still left with the issue of scrambled resources.  But more of the utilities in 2010 do work now with the exception of the visual reports.  I am still getting an unknown error dialogue box pop up with no success running the visual report.  I just tried to uninstall office 2007 and reloading it and that was no help either.
