Will APM Monitoring of SharePoint 2010 / IIS7 Web Apps Be Supported in SCOM 2012 RTM? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

My question is, will monitoring SharePoint 2010 will be "officially supported" with SCOM 2012 performance monitoring / APM (e.g., not the Management Pack, but the AviCode-derived bits)? Current RC documentation references IIS7 as being suported, which is part of SharePoint 2010, but I haven't been able to find a direct statement one way or the other. Does anyone know the answer to this question? Even if an answer can't be provided, I'd hope it could be considered in the project plan to include in the release if possible.

I have used the RTM build to monitor SharePoint 2010 and was impressed with the result, however was concerned by the fact that (at the time of the beta) a file needed to be added manually to IIS web site to enable monitoring. Hopefully this restriction might be resolved in time for the release?

I originally asked a variant of this question here (while the product was still in beta): http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/operationsmanagergeneral/thread/a37da293-1975-435b-bc28-d189a0af966e/

Great product! Thanks for any insight you can provide. I'd very much hope to be able to use and recommend this product for SharePoint application monitoring, but am cautious without formal documentation for this use case.

    Sincerely,

  • Hi

Just to clarify something for anyone else reading the thread and first response - Avicode 5.7 Management Packs for SCOM 2007 R2 are not compatible with SCOM 2012.I think testUser you are aware of that but others might not be.

At present the response is still the same one that Michael Guthrie gave to your earlier post. It is supported and does work, but does require the workaround due to the way the IIS discovery is designed \ implemented in the IIS MP (which is the basis for APM discovery).

Please post feedback to http://connect.microsoft.com and if you post back here the feedback ID then others can also vote in favour.

    Cheers

  • Hello,

SCOM 2007 R2 MPs also work with SCOM 2012, which means SCOM 2010 need the right Management Pack to monitor SharePoint 2010.

The disscusstion in the following thread may be helpful:

    Download scom 2012 management pack

  • Hi Yog Li,

Unfortunately I don't think this answers my question. I'm not looking for monitoring at the level of the Management Pack, I'm looking for APM / performance monitoring, such as is possible in AviCode. Does that statement that SCOM 2012 APM monitoring supports IIS7 Web Apps mean that SharePoint 2010 Web Apps will be supported for performance monitoring? From my earlier thread, some changes needed to be made to the SharePoint / IIS directories to support this (completely independent of the management pack), please see here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/operationsmanagergeneral/thread/a37da293-1975-435b-bc28-d189a0af966e/

Will APM monitoring be supporting with SCOM 2012 and SharePoint 2010? This link is too ambigious for me; it mentions IIS7, but doesn't clarify whether or not this is meant to include SharePoint 2010. I'm really hoping it does, as this is such a huge market, it would be great to clarify the documentation on this point, if it will in fact be supported:

  • Hi Graham,

Thanks for your help - I'll try to follow up on connect. After making this change to the IIS directory, I had trouble running the SharePoint configuration wizard again - however that could have also been related to another change I made (to enable SSL). Just a pointer, in case someone wants to look into this scenario from the development/testing team. I'll try to make a bug report if it happens again.

    Sincerely,

    TestUser

  • I just found this thread after a couple of months. Sorry for not noticing earlier.

I have to make a couple of corrections here. One might be interpreted as bad news, but the other one should be good :-)

Also please note that we have now a specific forum for the APM feature - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/scomapm/threads

    Thanks,
