Issues installing KB2628724 to fix drop down issue in Explorer 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, we are currently experiencing issues with drop down box in IE 7 since we installed cumulative patch KB2586448. After reading the KB article we decided to install the hotfix KB2628724 on the affected workstation. My understanding is that this hotfix installs version 7.00.6000.17104 of mshtml.dll which is dating from Sept 5th 2011.

On some workstation we're still having the issue after installing the patch, I found that those workstations have version 7.00.6000.21306 of mshtml.dll with a modified date of August 8th 2011. Since the patch is trying to update a DLL which already has a new version number it skips it and doesnt fix the issue.

Are there multiple forks of mshtml.dll? is the hotfix installing an older version?

In terms of solutions we are currently trying to replace the faulty dll directly, unfortunately it is not possible for us to update to IE 8+ at this point.

Yes.   GDR and QFE (now called LDR).

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824994

Referenced by all cumulative security updates for IE.   E.g.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/MS11-081

(currently most recent update to IE8 according to TechNet Security Bulletin search tool.)

BTW you won't find those terms exactly anywhere in such documents.

To see the reference drill down to

    [-]  Security Update Deployment

       [-]  Windows XP (all editions)

           [-]  Deployment Information

The KB article is currently showing also

    (Microsoft Search for

    )

  • Alright I found a work around for our current issue. I delete the version 7.00.6000.21306 of mshtml.dll on the workstation then run the hotfix. Hopes this helps someone.

  • Thanks Robert, I find this process a bit weird but at least it confirms my suspissions. I will keep that in mind in the future.
