  • If the windows 2008 is 64 bit you can do an in place upgrade

    MCP/MCSA/MCTS/MCITP

  • First, the new Windows Server 2008 R2 can only be installed (or upgraded) on 64-bit servers.  If you have Server 2008 installed on a 32-bit server, you will first need to upgrade your hardware to 64-bit before upgrading to Server 2008 R2.

Please go through this well explained blog that will assist you step-wise to understand the concern in depth and get this job done in a hassle-free manner : http://www.thomasmaurer.ch/2011/02/in-place-upgrade-windows-server-2008-to-windows-server-2008-r2/

  • Hi,

In addition, it seems that DISM works on Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 images, not Windows Server 2008.

In addition, you can refer to the link below for the supported upgrade paths for Widnows Server 2008 R2:
