Different auto-preview settings for read vs unread messages in Outlook 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there a way to have auto-preview on unread messages and no auto-preview for read messages in Outlook 2016?  Also, in Outlook 2013 there is a vertical bar displayed next to unread messages but the only place I have found that in Outlook 2016 is if I turn on the reading pane and I am not a fan of the reading pane.

By the "vertical bar" do you mean the blue vertical bar displayed on the unread messages? Based on my testing, if we turn off reading pane in Outlook 2013, we cannot see the blue vertical bar. The behaviors are same in both Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016.

For your request to have auto-preview on unread messages and no auto-preview for read messages, I'm afraid there is no way to achieve this with Outlook build-in options. As a workaround, you can create a custom view to only show your unread items (with the reading pane turned on). And when you want to see all your emails, you can switch to the view that has reading pane turned off.

  • Unfortunately you cannot show AutoPreview for only unread messages in Outlook 2016 or Outlook 2013. Restoring this feature is one of the top suggestions on Microsoft's suggestion-box list for future versions of Outlook. If you want to increase the chance that this feature comes back, you can vote for it here:

Bring back the "Show AutoPreview only for unread messages" feature

You might want to vote to also fix the bug where there's an extra wasted half-line of space under AutoPreview text, like screenshot below.

Remove extra whitespace under AutoPreview text in non-Compact Mode
