Server 2012 - GPO restrictions on admin account

    Question

  • Hi,

I have got a machine with WS 2012 on board and there is a problem with "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" on administrator account.

There are no domain accounts, only 2 local accounts (administrator account and standard account) and gpo restrictions catch them all. I cant access regedit, gpedit, not even cmd - someone before made an option in gpo to run only 2 programs and also blocked from running registry edit and command line.

Is there any other way to unlock gpo from restricting administrator account?

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting in our forum.

I have tested the Group Policy setting in my lab, and we could follow the following steps to solve the issue.

    1. Log on with Administrator account.
    2. Create a new administrator account under control Panel.
(Please Note: Do not log on with the new account before restarted to Safe Mode).
    3. Press SHIFT button and click Restart.
    4. On the Choose an Option screen, click Troubleshoot – Startup Settings – Restart.
    5. On Advanced Boot Options screen, select Safe Mode and press Enter.
    6. Log on with the new admin account, then we could modify the Group Policy setting as default.

If you have anything unclear, please feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,

    William
