User cannot log in - stuck on "Welcome" loading screen RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are running a server 2008 R2 domain with Windows 7 professional clients.

I am having troubles with one particular user this morning where he suddenly can't log on. He has been logged on once or twice before but now, regardless of what machine he tries to log on to, it gets stuck on the "welcome" loading screen, with the little blue circle spinning round. It never seems to get past this point (we've left it 45 minutes so far).

I have another couple of users with slow logins (can take a couple of minutes before it eventually logs in) but this is the only one (so far) that cannot log in at all.

Is anyone able to recommend the best action to try and resolve this, please?

    Best regards

    Katrina

  • It turns out it was a GPO that was causing the problem. The GPO was applied to the OU that all my users were in, but was filtered for one security group- the security group that the user was a member of. Once I removed this GPO, the user could log on within seconds instead of an hour or so.

Not sure why the GPO was a problem, it was only applying a printer!

  • Hello,

use Safe mode to logon and then go to msconfig and disable all startup items except Microsoft ones.

Also, make sure that your client computers are using your internal DNS server as primary DNS server.

If slow logon problems persists then it may be due to group policy settings appliance. For that, check event viewer for more information.

Also, please check that your computer is not infected by viruses / spywares / malware programs.
